SQL vs. NoSQL: What do you know about the database designs?

The decision to use a SQL database or a NoSQL database can be made wisely only if the ins and outs of both are understood. See how well you know the database architectures.

Some may say the SQL vs. NoSQL debate is moot because each database design performs the same function: data storage. There are numerous reasons, however, why a database administrator may gravitate toward an SQL or NoSQL database. Each approach has favorable qualities and downsides, depending on the type of project.

SQL databases use Structured Query Language and came into prominence during the late 1970s and 1980s. NoSQL, on the other hand, commonly refers to databases that came onto the scene in the early 2000s. With the emergence of NoSQL software, the hold that relational databases had on IT began to fall.

Settling the SQL vs. NoSQL database dilemma requires knowledge about both database architectures. Do you know the basics of the design approaches? Take this quiz, and find out!
