“Big data” management isn’t just a matter of deploying Hadoop and other technologies, according to Michael Whitehead, CEO and founder of WhereScape Software, which makes data warehouse design and development tools. “You’ve got to tie [big data] to a business problem and you’ve got to actually deliver some value from it,” Whitehead says. But that can be one of the biggest challenges companies face on big data projects as well as conventional data warehousing initiatives, he warns. For many IT departments, Whitehead says, delivering what business users want within a tight budget and short project timeline can be a challenge -- often leaving users underwhelmed and leading them to go their own way on technology. Whitehead spoke further with SearchBusinessAnalytics.com Editorial Director Hannah Smalltree about the challenges of developing big data and data warehouse systems and WhereScape’s technology approach.
