Why is managing change challenging for master data management initiatives? Now I've heard this is a huge challenge for a lot of people, so I sat down with Evan Levy. He is a partner and co-founder of Baseline Consulting. Evan has spent his career leading both practitioners and executives in delivering a range of IT solutions. He's also the co-author of the recent book, Customer Data Integration: Reaching a Single Version of the Truth and he recently authored a whitepaper called Managing Data, Managing Change: Making MDM Work, which is all about change management.

Now why is change management such a big deal in master data management (MDM) initiatives?
Evan Levy: Well, I think one of the challenges when people move forward with MDM is not really being cognizant of the issues of once we've identified the technology, once we know how to move forward, what is the impact to both business users and technologists? One of the reasons we put the whitepaper together was because we believe there are three discreet areas of change management or awareness that people need to be cognizant of when moving forward with their MDM initiative. We've identified as the business change management issues, the cultural change management issues and the data change management issues. I think that it's important to understand this is not about change management from the business being prepared to affect the business change; this is really MDM responding to those business changes.
