Cognos Inc. continued its European spending spree today with the purchase of Optima Analytical Solutions S.A.

The purchase of Optima, a subsidiary of Sage Finance S.A., based in Madrid, marks the fourth overseas acquisition by Ottawa-based Cognos in the past year. The company bought Business Planning Solutions Ltd. in Asia and U.K.-based Softa Group Ltd. in March of last year and Stockholm-based Frango AB in October.

The acquisitions all add to the Cognos Corporate Performance Management offerings and its European push, according to the company.

Optima will continue its operations in Spain under the name Cognos Espana.

Terms of the deal were not released.

Business Objects, MicroStrategy fight drags on

Meanwhile, the court battle between France's Business Objects SA and MicroStrategy Inc., in McLean, Va., waged on last week when a Business Objects patent infringement case was cleared for trial.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit overruled a lower court decision granting MicroStrategy a summary judgment in Business Objects' lawsuit.

In October 2001, Business Objects filed suit claiming that MicroStrategy was infringing on its patent for "semantically dynamic objects." The technology empowers users to access data with simple business terms, according to Business Objects.

The case is expected to go to trial in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California later this year.
