While perhaps not a wave, what might be called a ripple of consolidation in the business intelligence (BI) market is under way.
In the last five days, no fewer than three enterprise software vendors have acquired or announced their intentions to acquire BI makers or their assets.
On Monday, open source BI vendor Pentaho said it had acquired a Web-based interactive reporting tool for business users from defunct SaaS BI provider LucidEra. Called ClearView, the tool will be rebranded and integrated into Pentaho Analyzer Enterprise Edition, the company's commercial version of its open source BI suite.
"We fell short in terms of usability and ease of use from a business user perspective," said Pentaho CEO Richard Daley, explaining that ClearView will help fill that gap.
Also on Monday, CDC Software, a maker of manufacturing ERP, supply chain, and CRM software, said it plans to acquire an unnamed BI vendor that the company says will help it expand its share of the food and beverage, consumer packaged goods, and automotive markets.
And today, Noetix announced that it has finalized its purchase of Jaros Technologies, a maker of pre-packaged BI applications, to complement its own lightweight BI tools that tap directly into enterprise applications like the Oracle E-Business suite.
While noteworthy, the acquisitions pale in comparison with the wave of consolidation that took place in 2007 and 2008, which saw SAP purchase Business Objects, IBM acquire Cognos, and Oracle scoop up Hyperion.
