Informatica today acquired complex event processing (CEP) specialist Agent Logic, a move that should complement the vendor's existing real-time data integration technology. Terms of the deal were not released, but Informatica did say most of Agent Logic's 75 employees will join Informatica. CEP technology detects and analyzes event-based data, often from multiple sources, in real-time so managers and other business workers can take quick action. The technology is used by stock traders, for example, to react to changes in market conditions. It is also used by intelligence agencies to track crime and terrorism suspects. Informatica is likely to use its real-time data integration capabilities to feed Agent Logic's CEP software. The CEP market is expected to grow by a compound annual growth rate of 55% from 2008 to 2012, reaching $2.7 billion according to research firm IDC. Agent Logic, based in Vienna, Va., boasts a number of government customers it assists with intelligence-based analysis that Informatica will now inherit, including the U.S. Coast Guard. The company's strong presence in the public sector in part fueled today's acquisition, Informatica said in a press release. "With their track record and experience, Agent Logic will further strengthen our business in the public sector," said Sohaib Abbasi, chairman and CEO, Informatica, in a statement. In a blog post following the announcement, Chris Boorman, Informatica's head of marketing, said, "Agent Logic provides the critical enabling technology that allows us to correlate events in real-time, linking the events to data giving the power to the decision makers to execute actions based on information, rather than 'gut' feel." He added: "They eliminate the time required to detect and respond to threats and opportunities by automating the analysis of data and delivering instant intelligence to an individual or enterprise." Michael Gualtieri, an analyst with Cambridge, Mass.-based Forrester Research, said CEP technology is "all about pattern detection" among data integrated from multiple sources. So "Informatica may be adding value [to Agent Logic's CEP software] by adding higher-value information." He added that as the CEP market continues to mature, he expects vendors of related technology -- notably data integration, business intelligence and business process management -- to acquire or develop and embed CEP technology into their products. "You have a lot of different technologies that CEP can help out with so we think there will be an increasing case to embed CEP into these other technologies," Gualtieri said.
