Imagine trying to build a house without a blueprint. Sounds crazy, but that's essentially what data management pros are doing if they neglect data modeling concepts before embarking on master data management (MDM) or business intelligence (BI) initiatives.

A data model, explains Steve Hoberman, author of a recent book on the topic called Data Modeling for the Business, is essentially the underlying architectural diagram that guides any number of data management and other IT projects, from MDM and BI to application development.

But data models come in different varieties and play different roles, depending on the particular project. To explain how data modeling works and how to use it to full advantage, SearchDataManagement.com recently sat down with Hoberman for an in-depth discussion on the topic.

In this 12-minute podcast, appropriate for both business and IT professionals, listeners will:

  • Learn what a data model is and how it serves as the foundation for data management and IT projects (1:20)
  • Discover the different types of data modeling, from high-level data modeling to physical data modeling (2:50)
  • Find out how different data model names and terminology can cause confusion (4:00)
  • Learn how data modeling affects master data management projects (5:20)
  • Learn the role data modeling plays in business intelligence and data warehousing projects (6:40)
  • Find out how application development benefits from data modeling (7:15)
  • Discover who in the organization should take responsibility for data modeling and how that role has developed over time (8:30)
  • Learn just what organizations risk if they overlook data modeling (9:35)
