The business intelligence (BI) market has undergone a drastic transformation over the last two years, most notably in the form of consolidation. What was once a market of numerous small, independent pure-players is now one dominated by four so-called mega-vendors -- SAP, Oracle, IBM and Microsoft.

But all that consolidation doesn't mean the BI market has reached maturity, according to Howard Dresner, consultant, author, former Gartner analyst and inventor of the term "business intelligence." In fact, from a technology standpoint, BI software and applications still have a long way to go, Dresner said.
