Implementing data governance programs can be incredibly challenging, according to practitioners. Developing the processes and policies for managing corporate data assets is a major project that's often easier said than done, fraught with technology, cultural and political hurdles. That's why advice from other data governance practitioners is especially helpful for navigating this notoriously tricky topic. So, SearchDataManagement.com talked to professionals from three organizations that successfully implemented data governance and data quality management programs. We asked panelists to share their success stories, challenges, best practices and advice.
Each of the panelists had unique goals and situations to consider when designing and implementing their data governance programs:
- Mark Allen, senior program manager with Santa Clara, Calif.-based Sun Microsystems, focuses on business support, quality management, integrity and enterprise-wide policies and standards related to all of Sun's customer data, which amounts to millions of records. He helped develop and lead a phased migration of all of Sun's legacy customer identity information into one integrated registry and data model.
- Patrick Pelley, principal analyst, information quality with Detroit-based DTE Energy, helped update the companies' data management infrastructure and processes after a string of mergers and acquisitions left DTE Energy with many disparate systems, without a single, consistent view of business data. He's been a key leader in a major project to standardize data from multiple ERP systems onto a single SAP application.
- Gary Rosteck, manager of data quality with Southfield, Mich.-based R.L. Polk, was a data architect and project manager during a corporate initiative that created a real-time data processing architecture, a new "enterprise information factory" and the associated data governance processes. The company successfully implemented a data quality engine that enables it to expose business rules for data quality via a service-oriented architecture. This ensures that data integrated from hundreds of sources meet corporate quality standards.
In this 36-minute podcast, appropriate for both business and IT professionals, listeners will get valuable advice from practitioners with hands-on experience implementing data governance and data quality programs.
