The concept of data governance has been around since the 1970s, if not earlier -- yet a recent report by Stamford, Conn.-based Gartner Inc. predicts that by 2008, less than 10% of organizations will succeed at their first attempts at data governance.

That's a daunting statistic for organizations trying to develop data governance programs to support initiatives such as master data management, customer data integration and business intelligence. So, how do organizations get started -- and what steps can they take to ensure data governance success?

To learn more about data governance, SearchDataManagement called on Jill Dyché, partner and co-founder of Sherman Oaks, Calif-based Baseline Consulting for her expert advice. In this 20-minute podcast, appropriate for business, technical or executive leaders, Dyché offers insight into how to get started with data governance. Listeners will:

  • Hear Dyché's definition of data governance -- and get her "secret" for data governance success
  • Get three pieces of advice for data governance programs and hear real-life anecdotes about data governance at other organizations
  • Find out how to get funding and support for data governance programs (and how not to) and learn why you shouldn't rush to form a committee or get executive sponsorship
  • Learn how companies structure data governance teams, what teams actually deliver and what kinds of skill sets are required to be successful
  • Get more information about the role of data stewardship programs within data governance initiatives
