The data warehousing software market is getting some parental guidance. Bill Inmon, widely recognized as the father of data warehousing, unveiled "DW 2.0™" in December of 2005. DW 2.0 is Inmon's definition of a specific, next-generation data warehouse architecture. He said he created the designation because many data warehouses are missing some key architectural elements. Inmon has trademarked "DW 2.0" and only authorizes commercial data warehousing software vendors to use the designation after he reviews products against his specifications.
Data warehouses with the DW 2.0 certification differ greatly from first-generation products, Inmon said. Among its benefits, the DW 2.0 architecture lowers data warehousing costs, he said. It also helps companies make better use of structured and unstructured data, a concept getting more attention from analyst firms such as TDWI and Bloor Research. And, a DW 2.0 data warehouse enables organizations to develop an agile data warehousing foundation that can evolve and change over time, Inmon said.
This approximately 15-minute long podcast includes some technical details, but is designed to be accessible to both business and IT staff. Listeners will:
- Learn the main differences between a DW 2.0 data warehouse and a first generation data warehouse
- Hear more about the business and technical benefits of a DW 2.0 data warehouse
- Find out how Inmon suggests getting executive support for a DW 2.0 project
- Learn the four main components, or sectors, of the DW 2.0 architecture -- and how these support enhanced performance and organizational agility
