As spring heads toward summer, several data management conferences are on the horizon, and should be considered if you're looking to shake up your routine and get out of the office for some networking, education, training and discussions with IT experts.
The following is a short list of some conferences scheduled for June that are geared toward both long-time data management professionals and those new to the field. The events cast a wide net, covering topics including the Hadoop big data ecosystem, Apache Spark, data governance, data quality, data science and the MongoDB database, among other areas.
June 5-7: Spark Summit 2017 in San Francisco
More than 3,000 attendees are expected for this year's Spark Summit at the Moscone West Convention Center. The event, which began in 2013, is organized by Databricks Inc., the driving force behind the open source Spark processing engine.
Eleven tracks are planned, focusing on data science, machine learning, the Spark ecosystem and other areas, with 179 sessions on the schedule. Four of the six training courses are already sold out, according to the conference website. The speaker lineup includes representatives from Databricks, IBM, LinkedIn, UCLA, Microsoft, NetApp and a number of other organizations.
June 12-16: Data Governance & Information Quality Conference in San Diego
This data management conference, which bills itself as "the world's largest event dedicated entirely to data governance and information quality," includes six tracks and more than 30 case study sessions.
Topics include how to get started in data governance, governance and data quality metrics, how to manage data in the cloud or in a data lake, and tips on how to set internal data standards. Featured speakers include IT professionals and data governance directors from Cigna, Navient, Citigroup, the California Department of Education and various universities, plus data management consultants and executives from technology vendors.
June 13-15: DataWorks Summit in San Jose, Calif.
The global series of data management conferences previously known as the Hadoop Summit has a new name, reflecting a wider focus on the use of big data in organizations. The U.S. event, held jointly by Hadoop vendor Hortonworks Inc. and Yahoo, is set to include more than 170 breakout sessions, a Women in Big Data luncheon, training and "crash course" sessions, and meetups.
Tracks cover Hadoop, Spark, big data in the cloud, data governance and security, and the internet of things, among other topics. Keynote speakers include Hortonworks CEO Rob Bearden and executives from Yahoo, Liberty Mutual, Progressive, Pinsight Media and various IT vendors.
June 20-21: MongoDB World 2017 in Chicago
This two-day data management conference focuses on the MongoDB open source NoSQL database and is aimed at developers, enterprise architects, database administrators and IT operations personnel. Session topics include Atlas, MongoDB's database-as-a-service offering; data analytics; case studies; and how-tos covering database migration, data integration and other functions. Keynote speakers include Dev Ittycheria, president and CEO of MongoDB Inc., and Eliot Horowitz, the company's CTO and co-founder; Saška Mojsilović, an IBM research scientist; and Tom Schenk, chief data officer for the city of Chicago.
