Mark Whitehorn

Emeritus Professor of Analytics, University of Dundee

Mark Whitehorn is the Emeritus Professor of Analytics at the University of Dundee. He specializes in the areas of analytics, business intelligence (BI) and data science (DS). He has a background in both the academic and commercial worlds.

Whitehorn pioneered the application of BI and DS techniques to scientific data -- he works extensively with the renowned Lamond Labs at Dundee helping to apply analytical techniques to proteomics data. In the School of Computing at Dundee, Whitehorn helped to design and develop the oldest and most successful BI Masters course in the UK, and in 2013 the School introduced the UK's first Masters in DS. Whitehorn leads the teaching on both of these courses.

Since 1987, Whitehorn has been working with national and international companies, designing analytical systems. His clients include the Bank of England, Sainsbury's, Aviva and Lloyds TSB. He also works extensively with the companies that develop analytical software, such as Microsoft, Teradata and TIBCO.

In addition to his consultancy practice, he has also acted as an expert witness for the police and in civil cases -- notably patent infringement cases. He is a well-recognized commentator on the computer world, publishing articles, white papers and 10 books on database and BI technology. He also speaks regularly at national and international conferences.

For relaxation he collects and restores historic cars, which keeps him out of too much trouble. He only wears a tie under duress and unashamedly belongs to the beard-and-sandals school of computing.
