QUESTION POSED ON: 31 March 2009
I am a software developer with over 10 years of experience. I have worked for companies that make software for retail (POS + Inventory Management + CRM) and Financial Services (Asset Management). Besides coding, I have extensive experience in system analysis, estimates, complicated reports (Crystal Reports) and queries (SQL Server), etc. I would like to become a business intelligence (BI) analyst. What is the fastest way to get a BI analyst job? Should I take a course? Should I get a BI certificate? Where can I find companies that are willing to utilize my valuable IT experience?

It sounds like you have a good foundation to build a BI career. You may just need an opportunity to get some experience. Start with your current company to see if you can move into more of a BI role. Courses can be good not only for building up the resume, but also from a networking standpoint. However, companies today are looking for work experience over training/certificates.
