QUESTION POSED ON: 19 November 2003
How do you believe customers are progressing in compliance with Sarbanes Oxley Act: scoping, preparation, analysis, execution? Do you consider this a BI issue?

>
EXPERT RESPONSE
Actual compliance levels are not something I am familiar enough with to comment on although I have not yet seen a significant amount of business intelligence (BI) effort dedicated to Sarbanes Oxley. BI has not historically been used for a majority of major compliance items, which banks and healthcare companies, among others, routinely face. This is a shame because many data warehouses contain the information necessary, but still lack the corporate positioning required for such matters.

Some business intelligence vendors have developed fast-track solutions for Sarbanes Oxley. These are largely reporting environments which may use a data warehouse or a data mart, but it's not a requirement. Due to this overlap of business intelligence and Sarbanes Oxley vendors, I suppose it's a BI issue. I don't, however, believe Sarbanes Oxley will become the latest killer app for BI.
