Do we need Internet access to perform EDI or can companies/trading partners transmit information to one another using the same software, not necessary via the Internet?

Internet access is not required to perform EDI. Instead, EDI can run over dedicated, point-to-point lines as well as a broader environment like the Internet. However, because of the ubiquity of the Internet and the broad services for it, companies often try to take advantage of the Internet to deliver EDI. The downside of using the Internet is obviously security. The Internet is an unregulated, shared medium and as such leaves itself open to attack.
