Q

Can I find out when an OMVS Dataset File or a Directory is changed?

Find out how to use SMF type 92 records or ISHELL or ls Unix commands to get information, including when an OMVS Dataset File or a Directory is changed, added or deleted.

With OS/390 V2R10 or z/OS V1R4, how is it possible to know when (timestamp) an OMVS Dataset File or a Directory is created, changed or deleted and who (userid, task, job, etc...) made the changes?

You may be able to use SMF type 92 records to get the information (the common section along with subtypes 10 and 11. However, by also using the ISHELL or ls Unix command, you can see the some of the information. The ls Unix command will show the creation date and time for a directory and the last changed date and time for a file but not the creation date and time. If you use the ISPF ISHELL you can use the Attributes(A) command to find out the creation date and time as well. By looking at the owner, you may be able to tell who last updated or created the file, but a superuser can use the CHOWN command (or ISHELL) to change the owner of any file.
